Therapy in person and online

Therapist in Perth providing counselling and support for anxiety, depression, grief and trauma

Are you feeling sad all the time?

Are you easily tearful?

Do the worries just keep running through your head?

Do you suddenly feel extremely angry?

Or panicky and anxious?

Does it feel like nobody understands? Or there's nobody who really listens?

How can I help you?

Depression, Grief and Loss

Sadness and depression can hit anyone. Sometimes there isn't even an obvious reason.

Losing a loved one - a parent, a partner, a friend, a pet - can be devastating.

Other life changes, including divorce or losing a job or role, can lead to feelings of loss or grief.

Recovering from Trauma

When we experience trauma, whether it is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or childhood trauma, our bodies and minds react. Our basic sense of safety is impaired or even destroyed. Our sleep is disrupted, our concentration and memory suffer. We are changed and can't find our way back.

The trauma treatments I offer (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing and Internal Family Systems) help you to let go of the trauma.

Stress, Anxiety and Panic

Some stress or anxiety is normal in everyday life, and keeps us on our toes! But when stress or anxiety take over, life becomes very challenging. When anxiety becomes intense, panic can result.

Strategies to manage stress and anxiety can help you regain control. Identifying the causes and treating those can be life-changing.

Or is it something else?

How I work

Hi

My name is Marie Ashwood. I live in Perth, Scotland.

I work with adults and young people, in person and on Zoom, providing short and longer term counselling and psychotherapy, to support growth and help them to resolve the issues that are impacting their lives.

I have been working in mental health settings for many years, and in private practice for more than ten years.

I qualified as a counsellor and psychotherapist in Transactional Analysis, and have also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and IFS (Internal Family Systems). I may integrate these according to what feels most helpful to you.

Transactional Analysis looks at the dynamics between people, and how our early experiences of key relationships have shaped how we see ourselves and relate in our adult lives. If you have heard of the Drama Triangle, that's a TA way of understanding!

EMDR and IFS are both extremely useful in treating traumatic experiences more quickly than simple talking therapy. EMDR helps the emotions and the body to release the powerful feelings left behind by traumatic events.

IFS allows us to get in touch with the survival strategies that traumatic events trigger, which are experienced as the symptoms of trauma, for instance, being hypervigilant or highly anxious.

I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and a member of the EMDR Association.

Before your first session

I can offer a free 20 minute phone consultation during which we can decide whether and how we can work together, and you can ask any questions you might have initially about therapy. If this would be helpful please send me your number in the Contact section and I will text you to arrange a call.

In our first full session we can talk about what has brought you to therapy at this time. We can explore what you hope to gain from our work together and make a plan which suits you.

My aim is always to support you in your healing journey.

What Clients have said:

"You played a hugely important role in my life and getting me to the place I am today.
I just wanted to thank you, I'm a very happy person now, my life is full and I'm chasing my dreams."

Rosie, Client

"Marie is a warm, empathetic and skillful therapist. Her approachable and non-judgemental manner made me feel safe and listened to from the start. She used her extensive therapist's 'tool box' to help me work through current issues as well as past traumas.

I found the EMDR particularly helpful as it has allowed me to process past traumas and to move on with my life.

I was unsure at first about on-line therapy sessions, but I am now a convert! Getting to have sessions from the comfort of my own home is wonderful.

My mental health and personal growth have improved significantly thanks to Marie's guidance and I wholeheartedly recommend her."

Sarah, Client

"I was suffering from bouts of extreme stress which led to an anxiety that I couldn't seem to control. My sessions with Marie helped me to understand the cause, and to find ways managing the stress which reduced the anxiety. I am now feeling much better, because I feel in control.  I am so grateful I found her."
